Friends and heroes: Harriet is newly arrived in Athens. Having fled Nazi-occupied Rumania, she anxiously awaits news of her husband Guy, trapped in the spoilt city of Bucharest. When the young couple are reunited, they have little idea of the problems still to come.

This is my surprise pick for you—it's not a war novel, but Ishiguro does something Manning also does brilliantly: he shows how personal relationships are shaped by historical forces that characters can't quite name or resist. The unreliable narrator slowly reveals what he's lost through duty and restraint, much like how Manning's characters discover their own complicity in their fates.
