About the Author Kobo Abe (1924-93) was born in Tokyo but grew up in Manchuria, where his father worked as a doctor. He received a medical degree from Tokyo Imperial University in 1948, the same year in which he published his first novel, The Road Sign at the End of the Street. In 1951 he received the Akutagawa Prize for his novel The Crime of S. Karma, and in 1962 his novel The Woman in the Dunes was awarded the Yomiuri Prize for Literature. A year later the film version received the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. In addition to The Face of Another, his other novels include Secret Rendezvous, The Ruined Map, The Box Man, The Ark Sakura, Inter Ice Age 4, and the short story collection Beyond the Curve. E. Dale Saunders, translator of Kobo Abe's The Woman in the Dunes (1964) and The Ruined Map (1969), received his A.B. from Western Reserve University (1941), his M.A. from Harvard (1948), and his Ph.D. from the University of Paris (1952). He was a Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, having previously taught at International Christian University, Tokyo, and at Harvard University. Among his publications are Mudra: A Study of Symbolic Gestures in Japanese Buddhist Sculpture (1960) and Buddhism in Japan (1964).
