About the Author Dale Dougherty is the publisher of the O'Reilly Network and Director of O'Reilly Research. Dale has been instrumental in many of O'Reilly's most important efforts, including founding O'Reilly & Associates with Tim O'Reilly. He was the developer and publisher of Global Network Navigator (GNN), the first commercial Web site. Dale was developer and publisher of Web Review, the online magazine for Web designers, and he was O'Reilly & Associates' first editor. Dale has written and edited numerous books at O'Reilly & Associates. Dougherty is a Lecturer in the School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS) at the University of California at Berkeley. Adrian Nye is the author or editor of several volumes in the X Window System Series from O'Reilly & Associates. Adrian has worked as a programmer writing educational software in C and as a mechanical engineer designing offshore oil spill cleanup equipment. He has interests in the environment and the impact of people and technology. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering.Dan Heller has a degree in Computer and Information Sciences from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has developed end-user applications, integrating various well-known user interface styles from SunView to Motif to Open Look, as well as the design of his own interface toolkit. Dan has started his own company, called Z-Code Software, which designs and develops X-based applications for the commercial market. Its first product is Z-Mail, an electronic mail package that runs under Motif, Open Look, and nongraphical displays. Dan is also the author of O'Reilly & Associates' Motif Programming Manual.
